Words are Powerful  for Combined Kiwi-Korean Service  19 September, 2010

말씀의 능력

Consider our New Testament reading today  religious leaders had come from all over the place to watch, listen to and judge Jesus. From every village in Galilee and further south from the territory of Judea and the city of Jerusalem they had come. /

오늘의 말씀 중 신약성서를 생각해보십시오. 많은 종교지도자들이 예수님을 보고자, 말씀을 듣고자, 판단하고자 모든 곳에서 왔습니다. 갈릴리의 모든 마을에서, 더 멀리 남부 유대지역에서, 예루살렘에서도 왔습니다.

Now we know they often came with a critical spirit  which causes me to ponder, "How have we come today?" have we come with a critical spirit, seeking to find fault with what is done and taught? Or have we come expectant, eager to see God do miracles among us? /

우리는 그들이 자주 비판적인 시각을 가지고 왔었음을 알고 있습니다. 그러한 비판적인 시각은 저로 하여금  '오늘날 우리는 어떻게 나오고 있는가?' 하는 심각한 질문을 하게 합니다. 우리도 예수께서 행하시고 가르치는 것에 대하여 어떤 결함을 찾고자 하는 비판적인 시각을 가지고 나오는 것은 아닌가?' 혹은 우리는 어떤 기대감 곧 우리 안에 하나님께서 행하실 기적을 보고자 하는 갈망으로 나아오는가?

Thankfully on the day Jesus was there so also was the power of the Lord to bring healing. And I dare to believe that same power is present this morning Jesus is here, by His Holy Spirit, and he can heal and renew lives today. Today Jesus can touch and transform people, he can heal and forgive will we let him? To do so we need to exercise faith. /

감사하게도 예수님은 그날 예수님께서 거기 계셨고, 병자를 치유하시는 하나님의 능력이 나타났습니다.  저는 감히 오늘 이 아침에 같은 능력이 나타날 것을 믿습니다. 왜냐하면 예수님께서 성령으로 우리와 함께 여기 계시기 때문이요, 예수님은 오늘날 우리를 치유하실 수 있고, 우리의 삶을 새롭게 하실 수 있는 분이기 때문입니다. 오늘날, 예수님께서는 우리를 만져주시고, 삶을 변화시킬 수 있습니다. 예수님은 치유할 수 있고, 용서하실 수 있습니다. 예수님께 이것을 행하시도록 하면 어떨까요? 이것을 행하기 위해서는 우리에게 믿음의 훈련이 필요합니다.

As the friends of the paralysed man brought him to Jesus, Jesus saw the faith of the friends  in verse 20 we read, "When Jesus saw their faith..”It was a determined, persevering faith! /

친구들이 중풍병자를 예수님께 데려왔을 때, 예수님은 중풍병자 친구들의 믿음을 보았습니다. 누가복음5장 20절에서 이렇게 말씀합니다. '예수님께서 친구들의 믿음을 보았을 때.."  중풍병자 친구들의 믿음은 단호하고도 인내심 깊은 믿음이었습니다.

Maybe there is someone here today who has no faith or very little faith. Maybe you're not even sure if God exists, let alone cares for you. But the friend who invited you has faith  they believe Jesus loves you and they have brought you to where Jesus can speak into your life. Today, for those who will dare to listen, Jesus will speak...and his words will be powerful. /

아마도 오늘 여기에 믿음이 없거나 혹은 아주 작은 믿음을 가진 누군가 있을 것입니다. 아마도 그런 분은 하나님께서 여러분을 치료하실 수 있다는 것은 고사하고, 하나님께서 정말 계시는지에 대해서 확신조차 하지 못합니다. 그러나 그렇게 믿음 없는 중풍병자 곧, 여러분을 초대했던 그 친구들은 믿음을 가지고 있었습니다. 그들은 예수님이 믿음 없는 여러분을 사랑한다는 것을 믿었습니다. 그리고 그 영혼을 향하여 말씀하실 예수님 앞으로 데리고 나왔습니다. 오늘날, 예수님의 말씀을 감히 듣는 자들에게 예수님은 말씀하기를 원합니다. 그리고 그 말씀은 권세가 있습니다.

As the paralysed man lay before him, Jesus spoke. "Your sins are forgiven."I believe there are people here today, both Christians and non-Christians, that need to hear from Jesus, "Your sins are forgiven." Burdens could be lifted today, guilt could be dissolved, prisoners could be set free by these amazing words from Jesus  "Your sins are forgiven." /

중풍병자가 예수님 앞에 놓였을 때, '너의 죄가 사함을 받았느니라.' 하고 예수께서 말씀하셨습니다. 저는 오늘 이 자리에는 '네 죄 사함을 받았느니라.'는 말씀을 들어야 할 믿음이 있는 사람과 믿음이 없는 사람이 있다고 생각합니다. 오늘 '네 죄 사함을 받았느니라.' 는 예수님의 놀라운 말씀으로 무거운 짐이 벗겨지고, 죄를 용서받고, 갇힌 자들이 자유하게 될 것입니다.

Despite these amazing, life-transforming words, the religious people find fault and are critical. In their thoughts they accuse Jesus of blasphemy. /

이렇게 놀랍고도 삶을 변화시키는 말씀에도 불구하고, 종교지도자들은 결점을 찾고, 비판을 할 뿐입니다. 이러한 관점에서 그들은 신성 모독죄로 예수를 정죄합니다.

Now here comes an exciting, but scary thing Jesus can read our thoughts! He knows what we think. Yes, every thought, every secret that we hide from others, Jesus knows  and still he loves us. /

이제 여기에 흥미 있는 그러나 두려운 일이 있습니다. 그것은 예수님께서는 우리의 생각을 읽으실 수 있다는 것입니다. 우리가 무엇을 생각하고 있는지 예수님은 아신다는 것입니다. 그렇습니다. 비록 다른 사람들은 모르는 것일 지라도 모든 감추어진 생각과 모든 비밀을 예수님은 압니다. 예수님은 아십니다. 하지만 여전히 예수님은 우리를 사랑합니다.

Jesus knew the thoughts of these religious critics, so he asks another question: "Which is easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven' or 'Get up and walk'?" (v.23). Of course, both are of God only God can truly forgive sins and only God can heal a paralysed body, therefore it doesn't matter which one Jesus does. Either one will prove he is God! /

예수님은 이러한 종교적 비판자들의 생각을 알았습니다. 그래서 예수님은 다른 질문을 그들에게 합니다. 네 죄가 사함을 받았다고 말하는 것이 쉬우냐?, 혹은 일어나 걸으라 하는 것이 쉬우냐? (23절) 물론 두 가지 다 주께 속한 것입니다. 오직 하나님만이 진실로 용서할 수 있고, 오직 하나님만이 중풍병자를 치유하실 수 있는 것입니다. 그러므로 예수님께서 둘 중에 어떤 것을 하시던 문제가 될 것이 없습니다. 어떤 것이든지 '예수는 하나님이시다.'라는 것을 입증하는 것이기 때문입니다.

And so Jesus speaks once more. "....get up, take your mat and go home." (v.24). And immediately the man was healed. /

그래서 예수님은 한 번 더 말씀합니다. '일어나라, 네 자리를 들고 가라'(24절) 그리고 즉시 그 중풍병자는 치유를 받았습니다.

As Jesus spoke two things happened:

▶He proved he was God, and

▶Life flowed  healing and forgiveness occurred. /

예수님께서 말씀하실 때 두 가지 일이 일어났습니다.

하나는 예수님은 그 자신이 하나님이시다 라는 것을 입증하신 것입니다.

다른 하나는 생명이 흘러넘친 것입니다. 즉 치유와 용서가 일어난 것입니다.

Words are powerful. Jesus' words were powerful, but I believe our words are also powerful. /

말씀은 능력이 있습니다. 예수님의 말씀은 권세가 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 말도 또한 권세가 있음을 저는 믿습니다.

Let me explain three things about words: /

말씀에 대하여 세 가지를 설명 드리고 싶습니다.

Firstly, words have the power to bring life or death /

첫째로, 말씀은 생명 주기도 하고 죽음을 주기도하는 힘이 있다는 것입니다.

Proverbs 18:21.  'The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit'/

잠언 18장 21절에서 '죽고 사는 것이 혀의 권세에 달렸나니 혀를 쓰기 좋아하는 자는 그 열매를 먹으리라' 말씀하고 있습니다.

With words we can build people up, or we can tear them down. /

I remember hearing of anew employee who others decided to trick. Whenever they saw him they asked, "How are you?" He would respond saying, "I'm fine."But the others would then say, "You look terrible  you must be ill." By lunch time he went home on sick leave! Words are powerful.

우리는 말씀을 가지고 사람을 세우기도 하고, 혹은 무너뜨리기도 합니다.

한 신입 사원에 대한 이야기 입니다. 어느 날 고참들은 이 신입사원 놀려주기로 했습니다. 고참들은 그 신입사원을 볼 때마다  'How are you’하고 물었습니다. 신입사원은 그 때마다 '좋아요. I'm fine' 하고 대답을 했습니다. 하지만 고참들은 그 때 마다 '너 아주 안 좋아 보여, 너 아픈 게 틀림없어!’ 하고 말했습니다. 그 결과 그날 점심시간에 그 신입사원은 병가를 내고 집에 가게 되고 말았습니다. 이처럼 말에는 권세가 있습니다.

With our words we can bring life to people in this church we can affirm them and encourage them; or we can bring death  we can criticise and condemn them. /

우리는 이 교회 안에서도 말로서 사람을 살릴 수 있습니다. 서로를 신뢰하고, 용기를 줌으로써! 반대로 우리는 사람을 사망에 이르게도 할 수 있습니다. 서로를 비난하고 비판함으로써!

Your words, my words, have power let us use them to bring life and love! And to write positive words down and give them to a person can have an amazing effect  as one writer said, "Words have the power to give hope long after their writer has forgotten them." /

여러분과 저의 말은 권세를 가지고 있습니다. 생명을 주고 사랑을 주는 말씀을 사용합시다. 한 인격을 향하여 긍정적인 말을 쓰고, 긍정적인 말을 주는 것은 놀라운 결실을 가져옵니다. 누군가 이렇게 말했습니다. '오랜 세월이 지나면 작가는 잊혀 지지만, 한 마디 말은 오래 동안 소망을 주는 힘이 있다.'

Secondly, words reveal our hearts. /

둘째로, 말은 우리의 마음을 들추어냅니다.

Luke 6:45  Jesus said, 'The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks' /

눅6장 45절에서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다.' 선한 사람은 마음의 쌓은 선에서 선한 것을 내고 악한 자는 그 쌓은 악에서 악을 내나니 이는 마음의 가득한 것을 입으로 말함이니라.'

If you want to find out what is in a person's heart, listen to them. /

만일 여러분이 어떤 사람의 마음속에 무엇이 들어 있는지 알기 원한다면,  그 말을 들어보시기 바랍니다.

Now I realise that at first people may be able to hide what they really think and feel  we can all have times when we put on a mask and pretend. But eventually, what is in our hearts will come out our mouths be it good or bad! /

이제 제가 깨닫는 한 가지는 처음에 사람들은 마음속에 실제로 생각하고 느끼는 것을 숨기려고 한다는 것입니다. 우리 모두는 가면을 쓰고 위장을 할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 언젠가 우리 마음속에 있는 것이 입 밖으로 나올 때 그것은 둘 중에 하나, 곧 선한 말이 되던가, 혹은 악한 말이 되든가 할 것입니다.

Faith or doubt, love or hatred, joy or sorrow, confidence or fear whatever is in our hearts will be revealed by the words we speak. Words are powerful! /

믿음과 의심, 사랑과 미움, 기쁨과 슬픔, 확신과 두려움 등... 우리 마음속에 있는 어떤 것이든지 말에 의해 드러납니다. 말은 우리의 마음을 드러나게 하는 권세가 있습니다!

Thirdly, words can determine our destiny. According to the apostle Paul what we say can lead to our salvation/

셋째로, 말은 우리의 운명을 결정 할 수 있다는 것입니다. 사도 바울에 의하면 우리가 말하는 것이 우리의 구원을 이끈다고 말합니다.

Listen to what Paul wrote in Romans 10:9-10  'If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord", and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." /

로마서 10장9-10절에서 바울은 이렇게 말씀합니다. '네가 만일 네 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 네 마음에 믿으면 구원을 얻으리니 사람이 마음으로 믿어 의에 이르고 입으로 시인하여 구원에 이르니라.'

Our words combined with our faith can result in us knowing the forgiveness of God, the experience of being born again by his Spirit, the freedom and joy of knowing that we know God, and the assurance that when we die we are destined for an eternity with Jesus! /

믿음과 연합된 우리의 말은 우리로 하여금 하나님의 용서를 아는 지혜와 성령으로 거듭난 존재로서의 경험과 하나님을 아는 지식의 기쁨과 자유 함, 그리고 우리가 죽을 때 예수님과 함께 누릴 영생에 대한 확신을 가져다줍니다.

Truly, words are powerful. Let us pray:

"Lord, help us to use words well. Help us to encourage one another, to speak well of and to each other, and with your help, maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen."

진정으로 말은 권세가 있습니다.

오, 주님, 말을 잘 사용하도록 우리를 도와주소서. 다른 사람을 격려하도록 우리를 도우소서.  좋은 말을 하여 서로를 격려하게 하소서. 주님의 도우심으로 인하여 평화의 줄로 성령 안에서 하나 되게 하신 것을 지키게 하소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다.
